I’m starting the new year in Mexico with my husband and two sons.
We have been enjoying slow travel across this vast and diverse country for the last nine months. We started off in San Carlos in Sonora where we were staying right on the Sea of Cortez. We experienced having dolphins swimming and playing within a few feet of us. The sunsets in this sleepy expat town were stunning. It was the perfect first step for us as a traveling family.
When we were ready for a change we chose Guanajuato.
Located right in the heart of Mexico this colonial town is picturesque with it’s cobblestone streets, brightly colored buildings and bustling plazas. It’s been called the best of real Mexico and I would agree. It’s full of delicious food, street music, theaters, vibrant energy and at the same time is one of the most peaceful and tranquil places I have ever been.
We work a few hours a day on our laptops to finance our travels.
This is our dream come true. We wanted a slow-paced, high quality life. We wanted to travel and we wanted lots of family time. We opted not to have a mortgage, two cars, jobs with insurance, time off and IRAs. We chose to start our own business and to value experiences over stuff.
This offends people.
The most common response we get is, it must be nice! Or you don’t deserve it at your age or aren’t you privileged! At first I found this hurtful and then it hit me, where must a person be to respond this way? Would someone who is feeling good about themselves and their choices say this? Would someone living from a place of empowerment and optimism ever utter these words?
The answer is no.
When you are living life on your terms you will attract two groups of people, those who are very similar to you and those who very different from you. The love and passion you infuse into your life will bring amazing new contacts and relationships into your world and it will also signal trolls and haters. Focus on the first group and remember this…
Anyone who says you don’t deserve happiness actually doesn’t believe they deserve happiness.
Decide you will live well.
Make all your dreams come true.
Celebrate everyone who is doing well.
And remember anyone who is living something you desire is showing you it’s possible for you too!
